Barking Up the Right Tree
Cesar Millan is better known as the “Dog Whisperer.” At the age of 21, he came to the U.S., hoping to become like the all-knowing Americans in the fantasies he held as a kid. After being homeless and working various odd jobs for two months, he realized that Americans, in fact, did not know everything. Many of them couldn’t understand their own pets. So, he set out to provide people with a deeper understanding of their dogs. Today, he is a multimillionaire with multiple television series and books to his name.
Making Millions Out of $500
Ever since he was a boy, Jordi Muñoz, an immigrant from Tijuana, loved tinkering with electronics, modifying them or stripping them of their parts to create new ones. One of his later projects involved programming micro-controllers from Nintendo Wii parts to make his toy helicopters fly. Former editor-in-chief of Wired, Chris Anderson, came across Muñoz’s ideas on an online forum and loaned him $500, which the prodigy eventually turned into the multimillion-dollar robots company 3d Robotics.
Using Brain Power
Dr. Rafael Yuste immigrated to the Big Apple from Madrid, Spain with only two suitcases and a medical degree to his name. Although he had zero connections, he had a dream. Today, Dr. Yuste is not only an accomplished professor at Columbia University, he is also one of six researchers behind the multi-billion-dollar brain mapping project announced by the Obama administration in April 2013.
