The Homeland Security Department said Thursday it will halt deportation proceedings on a case-by-case basis against illegal immigrants who meet certain criteria such as attending school, having family in the military or are primarily responsible for other family members’ care.

Statement by Scott McVarish, Immigration Attorney in Los Angeles, Founder of the Immigration Law Office of Los Angeles, a private law firm, and Board of Director for the Clergy Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE-LA):

“This is a welcome decision by the federal government. Not only does it slow does the horrible practice of ripping families apart, but it will help the federal government focus its resources on criminals. Many of these criminals terrorize hard-working and law-abiding members of the immigrant community – so it is a double-win,” said McVarish.
