Michael Piston is the Senior Attorney at the Immigration Law Office of Los Angeles. He is considered one of the foremost immigration authorities in the United States. Mr. Piston has practiced immigration law exclusively since 1985 and has won over 30,000 immigration cases over the course of his 35 year career. Mr. Piston is a member of the AILA Amicus Committee, frequent teacher at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, ILW.COM and Federal Bar Association conferences and workshops. He is also a contributing author for AILA’s Annual Conferences Handbooks and ILW PERM Handbooks. Mr. Piston has been named a “Super Lawyer” in the field of immigration law each year for over a decade.
As recently reported in Mother Jones magazine, he is one of a handful of litigators who have been successfully suing the USCIS upon behalf of foreign nationals and their employers to overcome egregiously bad decisions, particularly in the field of H-1B denials, F-1 Denials and Adjustment of Status denials. He has won scores of successful settlements and/or courtroom victories. Recently, he became the first attorney to win a published decision granting an H-1B nonimmigrant a “preliminary injunction” allowing him to continue to work and live in the United States while his lawsuit against the USCIS was pending. Mr. Piston has extensive experience in all aspects of immigration law. He represents employers of all sizes and types and assists them with H-1B, L-1, TN, O and E-3 visas as well as assisting them with PERM/labor certifications, Outstanding Researchers, Multinational Executive filings, and EB-1 Extraordinary Ability petitions. His clients include both multinational corporations and small startup companies.
In addition, Mr. Piston assists individuals and small-business with all aspects of immigration needs including E-1 and E-2 for small businesses, family immigration such as marriage petitions for individuals and naturalization cases. Mr. Piston is widely considered one of the foremost litigators in the field of immigration law. His extensive litigation practice includes work correcting unlawful decisions of the USCIS under the Administrative Procedure Act and in the federal courts, Board of Immigration Appeals, USCIS Administrative Appeals Office (AAO), and appellate work.
Mr. Piston graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1978 and received his law degree from Wayne State University in 1982.
